Having a Bad Day?

I have bad days too. Sometimes, going out with friends or eating at a new restaurant with my bf isn’t enough. I even have moments in which I can’t even choose what to binge-watch on Netflix because I’m so overwhelmed, which is even more frustrating. So what do I do? I go home to recover from mental exhaustion. So I look for my favorite products that help set a calming mood, aka self-care products. Each make me feel amazing and remind me that I’m the shit.

1.Bath Bombs

I literally just recently realized the power of soaking in a warm tub full of glittering colorful water. Oh My God, if you want to feel like the most magical and luxurious mermaid, buy a bath bomb. They can range from $2-10 each from various places and are completely worth it. I like to get my from Bed Bath & Beyond because they literally give out their coupons like they’re begging  you to come to their store. So why not go?

2. Candles

The smell of a good candle can change my whole mood alone. I always keep about 5 in the house at all times. The scents of candles can be calming because many brands contain aromatherapy oils that are designed to different feelings and emotions.

And when they get to that awkward height where there’s not enough to light but there’s too much to throw away, you can melt them down and combine them. Here’s how! I plan to combine 3-4 in one container to have several candle scents in one.

Y’all know I know at least 1 natural brand for many products. I try to have one name-brand go-to brand, which is Bath and Body Works (during a sale) and Aromeaux Candle Shop based in NOLA. Check out a previous post about how I like to incorporate these candles into my routine.

3. Body Oils

I’m a little biased when I comes to body oils because I haven’t bought regular body lotion in 3-4 years. My skin is so much softer and more moisturized than it has ever been. Every morning or evening I feel like I’m giving myself a mini massage.

Body oils make me want to take my time with my skin and make sure every inch is receiving the love it deserves. And the smells that they carry make the experiences even better. My top 2 are Argan oil from TJ Maxx and Rosehip from Marjani Beauty.

4.My Journal

You need a place to dump all your shit. They way to get it all together is to put it in one place, your journal.  It wouldn’t be fair to put it all on your significant other or your best friend or even your mom. We all need a nice balance of asking for support from others and dealing with our issues on our own.

So I’ve been working on writing down my thoughts so I can process them properly. Also I tend to suppress my feelings and they always show up later. I made my journal super personal by decoding the cover with pictures and words that depict who I am. But the really cute ones from the stores work just as well.

5.Books

Getting lost in a book is the best. Books provide a great opportunity to escape your reality and jump into someone else’s for a moment. Reading as an adult is so different then reading while in school because this time you get to choose the text. You can find any book in your interest. Reading is great for self-care because you are spending time with yourself and your imagination.

My latest purchases were vegan related. I’m currently still working through Sister Vegan. Reading is really helpful for when I’m feeling weak during my lifelong journey. The memoirs and poems of other women really help me stick with veganism.

  • You are right. Everyone, no matter how much they don’t want to admit it, has bad days. But what I have come to realize is that mental health is real. I’ve been on the outside of it until a couple years ago. It is real, and I have been trying to find ways to deal with it. I have never seen a bath bomb until yesterday on a friend’s FB page. It looks cool, just wondering is it ok for men. My other favorites on your list is the journal and reading books. I do indeed have a journal (though on my computer) and I know I need to write in it more. And for books, well I am currently reading Sherlock Holmes, who I am a big fan of because I love mysteries. I will admit it does calm me down. In fact, this weekend I will be doing a lot of reading to get over the week I’ve had. Great post and wish you the best of luck with your site

  • I’m always looking for ways to manage and reduce stress in my life. I love your tips and product recommendations. I’ve never tried bath bombs, but after reading your post- I’ll definitely have to give the CPK Shea Essentials a try.

  • oh the bath bombs, candles and oils… it’s been a while since I had a bath. SInce I gave birth, I’ve been doing a quick shower. Staying under a warm shower for a long time is a luxury now.

  • even if it is a big or small stress, it is important that we reduce to a level that is manageable 🙂 I love writing, gardening, listening to music, etc I do love candles, I light them usually, it does have a calming effect

  • Bad days come and go. It is a part of life. When I have them, I take deep breaths and go out for a walk. There is something so calming about walking leisurely, not competing with stats or counting steps and measuring distance. I also use a lot of scented candles. My favorites are citrus blends and lavender. I also have “mantras” that I repeatedly tell myself – “Its just a bad day, not a bad life” and “This is just a bump in the road.”

  • Yes, we all need to do better at taking care of ourselves and take a time out to focus on our mental health. Yoga works for me and scented candles.

  • Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea
    shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to
    her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
